The Banana Splits are a fictitious musical group of four animal characters in red marching band hats. The hold meetings in the clubroom, often highlighted by the zany antics of the group. They are bitter rivals with the Sour Grapes Bunch, a group of girls whom often one-up the Splits in just about every aspect, often playing malicious pranks on the four. Each character has an individualized car, dubbed the Banana Buggy.

Fleegle often begins each club meeting by tasking the other members with something simple; these are never followed correctly by the other members. Fleegle frequently addresses the audience in a fourth wall break, usually saying he'd like to be rid of the other members. The Banana Splits often find themselves in Six Flags Over Texas, performing multiple numbers there. The club meetings often end with Fleegle dismissing with his gavel, often injuring his hand in the process.

They starred in their own television series, 1968's The Banana Splits Adventure Hour, and its 2008 revival, as well as a 1972 telefilm, The Banana Splits in Hocus-Pocus Park.

Their suits were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft.

Original Name[]

Joe Barbera explained in his autobiography, My Life in 'Toons, that the original name for the series was to be The Banana Bunch. However, there was already a children's book by that name and the author refused permission to use the title. Unfortunately, Kellogg's had already printed up 1.25 million cereal boxes branded with "The Banana Bunch" to tie in with the show. They were ultimately tossed into the trash.

Music[]

They released an album titled We're the Banana Splits and several singles from it.

Comics[]

They starred in their own Gold Key Comics title.

They also starred in a crossover comic series with Suicide Squad published by DC Comics.

Horror Movie[]

They starred in the direct-to-video horror movie The Banana Splits Movie in 2019. The movie is rated R for horror violence and gore by the MPAA.
