The Banana Splits are an artificial musical group of four animal characters played by actors in costume miming to music:
- Fleegle, a beagle playing guitar
- Bingo, a gorilla playing drums
- Drooper, a lion playing bass
- Snorky, an elephant playing keyboard
Their suits were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft.
Joe Barbera explained in his autobiography, My Life in 'Toons, that the original name for the series was to be The Banana Bunch. However, there was already a children's book by that name and the author refused permission to use the title. Unfortunately, Kellogg's had already printed up 1.25 million cereal boxes branded with "The Banana Bunch" to tie in with the show. They were ultimately tossed into the trash.
They released an album titled We're the Banana Splits and several singles from it.
They starred in their own Gold Key Comics title.
